Continuing the trend to provide consumers with their TV and video outside of the living room, Sony Electronics unveiled three devices that it said can deliver content wherever a broadband Internet connection is available.

Starting in October, two new Sony LocationFree base stations and LocationFree TV box will allow consumers to wirelessly stream TV programs, movies and personal video content to devices including a Sony PlayStation Portable game device, PC or television set outside the home.

Priced at 0 and 0, the two base stations can forward TV and stored video content from a home-entertainment center over a broadband Internet connection of at least 300 kilobits per second to any TV in a remote location. The 0 LF-B20 base station can also wirelessly connect to any remote home network.

The portable 0 LocationFree TV Box, meanwhile, plugs into any remote TV and communicates with the base stations in the customer home, allowing customers to tap into their home digital-media files and display video on a TV wherever they are.

The products provide access to video similar to that of Sling Media’s Slingbox. That system uses an Internet-connected box on a home TV to deliver live TV or stored video to a remote computer.

NFL games in college…?

slingbox
by ~kate~

Question by : NFL games in college...?
I'm off to college next year and am looking for a way to watch NFL games--preferably live and good quality--on my computer (assuming there is a season). Does anyone have any ideas of how to do this?

I looked into slingboxes recently but the reviews are extremely polarized; I don't know if anyone here knows if they are worth it.

I also know that you can watch them the next day on NFL.com with Game Rewind, but that's a last resort because I'd really prefer to see them live (and I know I wouldn't be able to resist checking scores).

I've also looked into NFL Sunday Ticket, but I don't have DirecTV and in order to get Sunday Ticket without DirecTV you have to prove that you can't get DirecTV where you live...I'm not so sure I can do that.

I'm leaning towards the slingbox right now but the negative reviews make me hesitate a little, does anyone know of any alternate technologies that maybe work better? Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Q&A: Is there a device that lets you watch videos stored on a remote pc on your tv?

Question by : Is there a device that lets you watch videos stored on a remote pc on your tv?
Like everyone, I spend most of my time at the office, where I have a really fast internet connection. I download TV/movies from time to time, and have been burning them to DVD tot ake home and watch. That seems like such an unnecessary step.

I've looked at Roku and Slingbox, but both seem more about either watching web content or watching recorded tv from a computer. Is there anything that reverses this and lets you basically watch recorded computer from your TV?

I'm thinking a folder I put video files in here at the office. Hardware at home shares that folder and lets me choose from a playlist what I want to watch.

With static ips on both ends and 20Mbps up here, 25Mbps down at home, I can stream uncompressed 1080p so it's not a bandwidth or dynamic ip issue but figuring out if there's a box that does this or if I should just buy a whole computer for home and create my own static links? I REALLY don't want another computer =((((

Thanks in advance for your help and iany information you can provide.

watching recorded TV programs when overseas?

Question by T A: watching recorded TV programs when overseas?
I stay overseas (at one location) for extended periods of time and have tried a couple of different solutions to keep up with my TV shows back home (in the US) with very limited success. I tried a streaming solution hooked up to my cable box back home (slingbox), but faced two major issues: 1) without very high bandwidth it was impossible to watch a decent picture especially when watching on a TV screen. 2) with the time difference streaming in real time was actually a disadvantage.

So I have been trying to find a practical solution that would allow me to schedule the recordings of the shows I want and seamlessly download and view them overseas on to my laptop (or a specified computer if need be). As far as I can tell I have a couple of options (would love to hear more if they are out there):

Try to "network" 2 tivos (one back home in the US and one overseas) and try and trick them to work as if they were on one network and use the multi-room feature. I don't now if this can work?
or maybe use 2 Linux media centers (like http://www.interact-tv.com/) or other networkable dvrs?
They key in either would be to have flexibility to reduce file size to get a bearable download time.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

TiVos record in MPEG2 and would take quite a while to transfer, considering your broadband connection does not even adequately support Slingbox. Plus your TOS with TiVo forbids outside connections.

A PC based DVR that encodes in MPEG4 would be best, IMHO.

Can I connect a phone w/ live TV to a television and watch TV wireless?

Question by Derek: Can I connect a phone w/ live TV to a television and watch TV wireless?
So here's my dilemma, going to the Chiefs Monday night game and I want to rig up my flat screen to watch the previous game in the parking lot. I have a SlingBox on my TV at home so the ideal situation would be to get a laptop with wireless card and access my TV from the computer, connect to flat screen and watch on the big screen but I don't have that. Is there a way to connect a phone directly to a TV or a phone to computer to TV to get the picture on the big screen?

Best answer:

Answer by PoohBearPenguin
The TV isn't the source of the video signal. It's just a display. Your cable/cable box/satellite box is the source of the video signal and that's the thing that you connect to your Sling Box.

Your laptop then accesses the Sling Box over the network, and then you get the TV show on your laptop's screen. You can, if you want, connect the laptop's video and audio ports to a larger TV screen - essentially turning the TV into a large computer monitor.

If your phone has 3G or 4G internet access AND can be tethered to your laptop (allow your laptop to use your phone to access the internet) then yes, it is possible to access your sling box. You will need to configure your router to do port forwarding for the sling box and you will need to know the IP address of your modem. (most ISPs use a dynamic IP system, so your address will change every 24 hours or so.)

I do not know what sort of video quality you will get from this setup, and I would also make sure you're not paying per-megabyte for internet data transfers, or else you'll end up with a huge bill next month.

Otherwise, just record the game and watch it when you get home. :-)

Q&A: new iphone or curve 8900 for att?

Question by : new iphone or curve 8900 for att?
Hi,

I am debating if I should get the new iphone or the curve 8900 for att. I can buy 2 8gb cards for the curve so I will have the same memory for music and pictures as I would have on the iphone.

The phone would be used for:
-Making a lot of calls
-A student
-Basic emailing, texting (and bbming if I get the blackberry)
-Browsing basic websites
-Maybe to hookup the mobile slingplayer for my slingbox
-Basic entertainment

I think I will find it easier to type on the blackberry. Do I need a data plan on both phones, if I am always by a wifi connection... can I get one and then just cancel it right away? Is there any disadvantage to getting the non-3g blackberry? Is there a chance the slingplayer would work through edge?

If connected to wifi or just connected to 3g / edge, will I be able to view the same websites, or will I be able to view more with the iphone?

Thanks.

Man gets ,000 phone bill after watching Bears game on web

By Chris Chase

On November 2, Wayne Burdick (not pictured) was aboard a cruise ship in Miami waiting to depart on a Caribbean cruise. While still docked at the port, he set up his laptop and wireless card and accessed his Slingbox device which allowed him to watch a Chicago Bears game via an Internet connection. When the game was over, Burdick closed his computer, embarked on the cruise and returned home to find a bill from AT&T charging him over ,000 for the three hours of Internet usage.

Apparently, AT&T had charged Brudick the international rate for the access. At two cents per kilobyte, the total charge was ,788.93 for the time spent watching the game, which breaks down to about ,500 per Rex Grossman interception.

Burdick pled his case to AT&T, saying he was still at the port and not in roaming territory. After speaking with nearly a half-dozen people at the company, he managed to get the bill down to ,000, even though he provided documentation that he was still technically in Miami at the time he used his wireless card.

Eventually, the whole matter was settled after Burdick contacted Team Fixer at the Chicago Sun-Times and they contacted the phone company. AT&T acknowledged its mistake, saying that Burdick's device was picking up a signal it shouldn't have been.

At least Burdick's efforts were worth it. The Bears beat the Lions that afternoon, 27-23

Can I play my Wii on a TV in another room?

by Jeremy Toeman

Question by milkwithonesugar80: Can I play my Wii on a TV in another room?
I have just bought Wii Fit, and thought it would be great if I could do the jogging part of the program on my treadmill in the garage (can't move the treadmill to the lounge!). Is there any way of sending the Wii signal from my lounge to a TV or portable DVD player in the garage on the other side of the wall? I don't think you need the sensor bar for jogging, just the Wiimote in your pocket. I guess something like Slingbox for Wii - don't know if that would work? Any ideas?

Can I pack a Tivo in my checked baggage on a commercial flight?

slingbox
by Jeremy Toeman

Question by JustWondering: Can I pack a Tivo in my checked baggage on a commercial flight?
I know it sounds crazy in the age of Slingbox and cheap DVD recorders, but the fact is the easiest way for me to watch my recorded shows (namely this weekend's NFL playoffs) from my hotel room next week is to just bring my Tivo with me and plug it in to the hotel TV.

Are there restrictions against packing consumer electronics in checked baggage on an airline? Besides the danger of theft or physical abuse, is there any other reason NOT to just pack my Tivo? Is there any danger in the X-Rays harming the hard drive?

Thank you!

Anthony

USB tuner to stream video online?

slingbox
by Dan Dickinson

Question by : USB tuner to stream video online?
I currently use a USB tuner for watching TV on my computer. I'd like to use it to stream the signal online, PRIVATELY, so I (and I alone) can continue to watch live TV while I'm out of town. Is there any way to do this? I'm asking to do the exact same thing that a Slingbox does, so this clearly isn't an illegal question. I've asked three times, and it never gets answered because someone keeps reporting it.

This is a 100% legal question...can someone please help with an answer? Thanks!
Thanks! Unfortunately, I've actually read that blog before and tried to replicate the results, with no success.

Never done it myself, but I assume if the stream is pure video, no DRM or anything, then yes.
You could set the steam up as an input to something like justin.tv

Edit: here's a quick tutorial I found.
