I am thinking about buying the slingbox pro, but im not sure if i will be able to use it. Everything i have seen about the slingbox controlling a tv has something about a Cable Box, and i dont have that. I just have the cable plugged in directly into the Tv, so my question is will the Slingbox pro IR cable be able to control the Tv without the Cable Box?

I have a Slingbox Pro but can see no way for it to control a TV. It just controls boxes that you plug into it.
You might be able to do if you have video/audio output from the TV.
You would need to check your remote control is supported by Slingbox too.

I bought the AV version. It seems easy to install but came to the third or fourth step. Do I need to plug into the phone jack?

As a fellow Slingbox owner, I can tell you its pretty simple to set up for the most part. The hardest part is configuring it for remote viewing, but even that can be pretty easy depending on the router you have.
You don't tie the Slingbox to your phone line. It will plug into whatever source you want to sling, and into your home network router.
SlingPlayer (the application that lets you connect to the Slingbox) can be installed on as many laptop or desktop PCs you want, totally free of charge. If you want to Sling to a Windows based or Palm OS Mobile phone, the software is relatively inexpensive.
There's a great web community just for Slingbox owners. I've gotten lots of help there in the past, and the folks there are really good about answering questions. They even have a lot of help info that will help you get your Slingbox running. The site is http://www.slingcommunity.com
Sometimes they run contests to give out free copies of the mobile software, shirts, and other Sling gear. I've haven't won anything yet, but I'm always keeping my fingers crossed.

Yes.
My husband uses this with his father. He has it set up so his father can receive cable overseas. The picture is pixelated and not as clear as a TV but it is convienent. Expecially if you have it set up to a DVR where you can record the stations you want.
The only issue is if you do not have acess to the Slingbox you may be with out cable and service when there are glitches. If you are using this for business travel, then it should be no problem as at the worst you may have to reset the box and cable when IP adresses drop. This is all what my husband has told me.
All in all he reccomends it but do not expect HD quality, and their could be a little latency involved depending on your internet connection.
