FYI: The title is a bit misleading now that the newer HR22 and HR23 are available. Both of those also work with the AM21. The HR20 is the only HD DVR from DirecTV that doesn’t work because it has it’s own, built in Over The Air (OTA) tuners.

Because DirecTV would not carry my local PBS station in HD, I bought this and put up a digital antenna. The unit integrates well with the DirecTV DVR and the “off air” programming is integrated right inot the guide.

The AM21 works great when paired with an appropriate antenna. Can be ordered directly from DTV for $50 so don’t pay more than that for it though.

This is a great product if you live in the proper over-the-air channel market that does NOT get it’s signal from repeaters. I live in Montrose, CO and most of our “locals” come off a repeater here. The TV stations are in Grand Junction 60 miles away. So, all of our “local” channels use different channel numbers than what is listed in DirecTV’s database. If this device could allow auto-scanning or manual tuning, then it would be a great device were I live as most of the GJ HD locals work just fine via our OTA antenna connected directly to the TV that is dished out via the repeaters.
Will be returning to seller b/c DirecTV does not have their act together when putting out new technology that should offer more flexibility for those of us who are in a non-local TV market that they do not offer locals for.
Pros: Great product if you’re in the proper OTA market
Cons: Does not allow manual/auto-tuning of the OTA signals
