On a computer monitor can you: watch local basic cable, play xbox 360, and use it normally?
Question by The Canuckian One: On a computer monitor can you: watch local basic cable, play xbox 360, and use it normally?
I've been doing some research on if it's possible to do all these things on a computer screen. I have shaw high speed cable internet, and I don't mind switching a cable here and there.
I think the answer is an external tv tuner, however I don't know if my xbox 360 will connect to it, and play well enough. Also, i don't know if a slingbox is better. I have 5.1 surround sound speakers and i want to be able to use those while playing xbox 360.
Hopefully this makes sense, and someone can list the things i need, and if it's at all possible.

You will need to buy a tv tuner card. They do not cost to much prop about £20 for a normal one but you can also buy ones with freeview or sky built in

Hiya Canuckian,
Yes my son, your prayers have been heard and the answer is upon you, yuck yuck yuck!
Seriously, 1 product is specially made for EXACTLY what you want. The first one was released about 9 years ago and now there are many, the price has come down.
It is the VGA BOX!!
1 Monitor
1 Computer
2+ Game Consoles or DVD Player or VHS or VCam
1 Cable (some have it, some don’t) Input
Hook it up ONE TIME and use a simple button to access switch back and forth as needed.
You get what you pay for, so it you have a HD Widescreen and you want up to 1080p support, you pay. If you have mom’s old monitor the cost is about $25 to $50.
I do not like to buy from Amazon, but they have decent user reviews and photos. Here is a list of VGA boxes on Amazon so you can learn about them and see the different options.

here are a couple of recommendations:
The XGA Box = GOOD Quality for standard CRT or LCD monitors, res up to 1024 x 768 – $60

NEOYA = BETTER QUALITY SH*T – 2 CONSOLES + PC + Progressive scan, up to 1080p. You will use the composite RCA jacks out of the Shaw cable box instead of console 2, Need to purchase cables: About $75
XCM 1080p VGA Box, BETTER QUALITY this is compatible with most consoles, NTSC & PAL. $75
Well, that’s the scoop dude.
Game On.
GOOD LUCK!!
