Q&A: slinglink or powerline adapter?

Question by adrian: slinglink or powerline adapter?
I'm thinking about getting a slingbox AV and i know that i have to connect a router to it and my router is in another room in my house. so, i have 3 questions:
1. do i have to buy the slinglink so that i could connect my router to the slingbox?
2. if i do need the slinglink, do i have to buy 2 of them?
3. can i use a powerline ethernet adapter instead of the slinglink?
Help please!

Best answer:

Answer by LW
The Slinglink is pretty much a powerline ethernet adapter, so it may be worth trying a generic one if you don't want to buy theirs.

I've got friends who have had luck using a 802.11g wireless bridge (available from Linksys and others) to connect to a wireless router - maybe that's an option for you.

Given the two choices, I'd try the wireless option first. I think that's more likely to be reliable.

Pros and cons DHCP vs Static IP for a home wireless and wired network.?

Question by John Dull est: Pros and cons DHCP vs Static IP for a home wireless and wired network.?
I have a Wireless Linksys router and use some wired desktops and wireless/wired notebooks plus plan on pluggin in a Slingbox.

Is it best to set my router to enable DHCP or to set it maually?

Best answer:

Answer by Bobby_420
I keep DHCP enabled, but some of my computers I assign a static IP to. Why? Because I like to know the specific IP for my desktop and my wifes desktop. Sometime I need that to access it over the network and do not want it changing all the time. Other than that I do not know of any benefits of speed or anything. Just personal preference.

by Jeremy Toeman

Question by Juan89: Slingplayer Mobile for my ipod touch?
Well just recently i got slingplayer mobile for my ipod touch but it says i need to log in i tried to make an account online but it says i have to enter a slingbox ID
so does that mean i need a slingbox like buy one or what is that?
is there anyway i can get around that?
or what should i do?

Best answer:

Answer by LeviathanTM
you need to actually purchase the Slingplayer...its a device that allows you to link your television to your phone so you can watch live tv from your phone in real time. Currently there is no way to "get around" the sling player because it requires a reciever to send the television to you rphone...unless you know someone who has a slingbox and will let you use there ID.

Think of it this way, if you download XM radio you cant listen to the satellites from your phone because you dont have the antenna.

Question by notbeinguseful: What gadget for under 0 would you buy?
I'm thinking of buying a Chumby (http://www.chumby.com/) when it becomes available. With all the crazy gadgets out there, which would you buy for 0 or less?

Things I've considered: iPod Nano/Shuffle, Slingbox Solo, Nintendo DS...

I'm just curious if anyone knows any miracle device I've never heard of :)

Best answer:

Answer by Grá
No miracle devices... sorry! (:

But if you play video games, go with the DS - it's great. I love that you can connect and play with other people. And it's super small and lightweight, but still has awesome graphics, wi-fi, and a pretty nice touch screen...

Which router for wireless and wired network?

Question by mad dog in the fog: Which router for wireless and wired network?
My house is wired with CAT5 and most rooms have at least one network connection. I want to set up a router so that I can have wireless access to the network but also be able to use the wired network for things devices like Slingbox and Sonos. Can someone describe how I should set this up - i.e. can I just set up a single router to do this or do I need to use a wireless router and a separate switch? I'd also like to know which routers/switches you'd recommend in the 0 price range.
