Q&A: Moving Modem to another room with filter problems?
Question by computerwizard145: Moving Modem to another room with filter problems?
Ok I have my DSL modem, Wireless Router, and Slingbox networked in my home office. The slingbox is connected to my home office tv. But I would like to move all of these equipment to my living room so I can plug into the PS3, TV, and Sat Box. Anyway I have tried moving the modem myself (which I know how to do). I move the filter and everything with it. But when I hook it up to the phone line behind the tv cabinet it doesnt work. I Think it is because when the man from Bellsouth installed my modem and such he put one underground filter on my house so I would not have trouble with filters on all my phones. I had a filter on home office though because that was originally the garage and it did not run. So I had an underground filter and a sub filter at my desk with my modem. But when I move it I have to plug it up to the phone line with the underground filter while using the sub filter with it. When I do this I can't connect to the internet though. Is it because it is running through two filters? What do I need to do to get around this so I can move my modem to my living room.

Filters and splitters block the DSL signal to keep hissy noise off the telephone line. DSL will not work through a filter.
PhoneLine - NID Splitter ----- DSL Modem
. . . . . . . . . . . . .\----- All other phone jacks
Sounds like you have a Splitter at your Network Interface (where the telephone line meets the house.) This is good, it gives higher DSL speeds as the DSL signal only goes to one jack rather than being spread to several jacks.
At that underground filter there should be a connection marked DATA that is connected to your present DSL jack. There should be a connection marked VOICE that is connected to all of your other phones.
To move your modem, first move the wire on the DATA connection to the VOICE connection, all the wires on the VOICE, nothing on the DATA. This will filter the line to the garage.
Next, find the wires going to the living room jack.
If you have several wires tied down on the VOICE connection simply plug a cordless phone into the living room jack you wish to use and take the set out to the underground and lift wires one at a time until you lose the dial tone to that jack. Move that wire to the DATA connection.
If you have a single cable with blue, orange, green, brown pairs pick an unused color and tie to the DATA connection, open the living room jack you wish to use and connect the jack to that same color pair.
You should be able to plug your modem into the living room jack and get DSL Sync.

you could always try hooking it up to the master rooter in the back of the tv. its red and large not very misssable . i wud also suggest sleeping in the garden as this has been proven to stirr up emotions in the cable and get things started! good luck

Although there aren’t really antonyms for nouns, what is the closest to the opposite of a “box”?
Question by : Although there aren't really antonyms for nouns, what is the closest to the opposite of a "box"?
Ok, I would like to clarify the context of the question. The question arose when my coworker saw that I had bought a "SlingCatcher", which is a device that takes electronic media and puts it on your TV. A "SlingBox" on the other hand is a device that takes TV and streams it to your computer. We were commenting on how these 2 devices were diametrically opposed, but that we were not sure "Box" and "Catcher" were opposites. Therefore, we wanted to know if SlingMedia should have come up with a better name than "SlingCatcher". Please fill in the blank: "Sling____" is the opposite of "SlingBox".

Q&A: How to connect multiple TVs to cable and be able to record shows?
Question by might_wake_up: How to connect multiple TVs to cable and be able to record shows?
If I have multiple TVs that I want to connect to my cable, but do not want to run any coax, the best thing I can think of is to connect them via wireless or ethernet cables.
Products like slingbox and Sony's LocationFree have a lot of additional functionality and are a bit costly for my limited use case. I only care about viewing TV while at home and would (ideally) use my home network to stream content between TVs and whatever recording device. Can anyone suggest a setup or a product to use for this? I know slingbox is doable, but it requires 4 items (slingbox, 2 x slinglink, slingcatcher) which adds up.
Any thoughts? Thanks!
Thanks!

Wireless will work if you don't have interference from walls, doors and other wireless devices. You won't know until you try.
Using ethernet cables would be the same as running coax unless your house is already wired with ethernet cables. If it is, it should be wired for cable tv also.
Check out the house to see if it is wired for cable. The main connection box might be in the garage.
If it's not, good luck. Cable would be a lot cheaper than slingbox.

Q&A: Port Forwarding on my wireless modem.?
Question by jacobmbp: Port Forwarding on my wireless modem.?
I recently bought a SlingBox and am trying to set it up to where I can access it from outside my home. SlingBox tech support tells me I need to contact my ISP to enable Port Forwarding on my modem. My ISP tells me they don't support that. When I enter my modem's IP in my address field I am able to access it, but under the Gateway Option, there is no Port Forwarding Option.
I have an Ambit U10C019 wireless modem.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I'm about ready to just return my slingbox...I can't seem to get it. =/
Thanks!!!
It's a wireless modem...do I really need a router?
