Q&A: Question about those new converter boxes?
Question by Jeff H: Question about those new converter boxes?
I recently won a Slingbox SOLO in a raffle and I only have analog cable. I don't plan on getting digital cable anytime soon but I since it is only a SOLO I need a cable box that has the tricolor video out R/L audio out.
I am wondering if those new converter boxes are capable of inputting analog cable and changing it to those tricolor outputs or does this work simply for those "rabbit ear" antennas?

You can, but you need to get the right DTV converter box, and the type of DTV converter box you need is considered as an HD tuner, and not any old HD tuner will work, it has to be one that is compatible with cable, these HD tuners are considered as ClearQAM tuners, as QAM is the protocol used in cable television, a ClearQAM tuner is a QAM tuner that picks up digital channels in the clear, meaning not blocked by your cable company
There may be ClearQAM tuners that are not HD (I don’t think there are, but there could be), but the ClearQAM tuners that are not HD will not have component output on them (Component cables are the “tricolor” cables you are talking about, the ones that have a Red, Green, and Blue connector on them), as component is typically used in HD and ED setups, not in SD setups, because composite (yellow) or S-Video is typically used in SD, so you need the HD ClearQAM converter so you can have component outputs
Now for the setup, if you want to connect a cable line directly to your television, then you need a splitter, then go from the cable jack on the wall to the splitter, and from the splitter to the TV, then take another cable line from the splitter and connect that to the HD ClearQAM tuner, then connect the component out of the ClearQAM tuner into the component in of the Slingbox (you may want to run a composite line from the ClearQAM tuner to the TV so you can set it up properly), next, take the IR emmiters and connect them to the box on the top or bottom (so the IR beam is aiming towards the front of the box, so it can send commands like a remote), then program the slingbox so you can connect it to the internet, and so you can get the IR codes (this may need to be done on a computer, so you may need to connect it to your LAN and internet connection before programming IR codes), then, on the computer, run the program and connect to the Slingbox, you should then be set up, if not, do the finishing settings, then you are ready to use the Slingbox
Now for a little run down on how the Slingbox will work:
Imagine the slingbox as a television, but instead of having a screen, it forwards all that information over the LAN/Internet, then displays it in a program installed on your computer or other Slingbox compatible hardware/software
When you go on the computer and run the program, the program will give you a display, and connect to the Slingbox over the LAN or Internet, once you have a connection between the program and the Slingbox, any of the buttons you click on in the program (Channel Down for example), it will send that command over the LAN or Internet, send it to the Slingbox, then the Slingbox will send that command to the IR emmiter, so it would be as if you pressed Channel Down on the remote itself, then whatever video is comming from the HD ClearQAM tuner will be sent to the Slingbox, then be forwarded to the program, allowing you to watch whatever is displayed on the tuner
For some words you may not understand
Component-The Red, Green, and Blue connections for video and the Red and White connections for audio
Composite-The Yellow connection for vider and the Red and White connections for audio
Line-A physical cable, like coax
IR-InfraRed, it’s a type of invisible light source that sends a morse code like code (flashing light) that the IR sensor picks up, depending on the flash timing, and completes the command
