Things you can do with your computer (that you never thought you’d be able to do)
eThe personal computer has become so much more than just a word processing, email and Internet browsing device. Now, we are using our laptops and desktops for a variety of important functions that would have seemed like science fiction only a few short years ago. It makes sense given the amount of time people spend in front of the screen that technology would evolve in order to let us do more and more while we're sitting there. Consider the following practices and pastimes in which computers now play a role.
New things you can do with your computer
Watch TV
Thanks to websites like Hulu.com (that streams thousands of TV shows and movies right into your browser) and technology such as Slingbox (which gives you the power to watch anything on your TV or DVR on any computer with an Internet connection) you are now able to move your entertainment base off of the couch and out into the world. Think about it: only two short decades ago you had only a handful of channels available, all of which had to be delivered through a large clunky box of wires in your living room.
Make and receive phone calls
Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) technology has made it possible for individuals to make and receive phone calls using this computer. In addition to the convenience of VOIP digital phone service, there is also the added bonus of low price. Consumers and businesses who have switched to VOIP Internet phone service report significantly lower phone bills, especially when factoring in the free calling to other individuals who use the same provider.
Buy a home
Heck, you don't even need a full-on realty website to buy a home on your computer these days. Thousands of people have used sites as simple as Craigslist to locate and research their dream home. And even in this tough economy, there are still hundreds of lending websites that make it ridiculously easy to get financing.
See loved ones around the world
Webcam technology has come a long way in recent years. What was once expensive and offered only the lowest resolutions has now become a more lifelike experience. As a result, everyone from parents on business trips to the young men and women serving overseas in the armed forces are now to able to communicate with words and pictures over the Internet using just a simple web cam strapped to the top of the computer.
Live in a completely different world
While many people have been known to "lose themselves" in their computers, there are now several places where and individual can literally start a new life...a "second life" to be specific. Second Life is a completely immersive experience in which individuals can create entirely new personas and live out virtual lives on line. It's different than other massive online communities in that the goal is simply to...live. Major corporations have invested millions into Second Life in a hope to reach out to those who are spending countless hours there.

The Secrets to Getting All the Computer TV Entertainment You Ever Wanted – Even if Tech Handicapped!
If you want to connect your computer to a TV (TV to PC) or watch Internet TV or do both, this requires software and/or hardware to complete the job. And to get the best overall quality to your computer, requires knowing exactly where to find the best product. Home TV, Internet TV and Computer TV continues to evolve and gives users other options to fix their current lifestyles. Technology has given us hi-tech laptops, hand-held computers and mobile phones. Now with the best of computer media products, watching/listening to TV, video and radio on a computer has never been easier.
There are essentially three options to consider to watch computer TV but first you need to think over a few things. How much time and cost you're willing to spend can decide the best way to go. And knowing your computer's OS (operating system) can decide which product to choose. The common denominator to all three options relates to an Internet broadband connection. However if you rather not include the Internet for more computer TV mobility, then you can use an s-video card (PCTV card or TV-Out card) and coax cable to connect your TV to PC.
Also keep in mind--when reviewing the three options below, you can choose two of the three to watch both Internet TV and Computer TV.
Option #1:
PCTV or TV to PC Hardware. A revolutionary and new generation of hardware has the ability to let users connect to their basic cable, digital cable box or satellite receiver using a Windows-based or MAC desktop/laptop computer with an Internet High Speed connection. This hardware connection provides the best video quality out of the three options. Users can watch cable/satellite TV channels and videos as well as control their home TV, DVR, basic cable, digital cable box or satellite receiver via an Internet connection from any location.
This user-friendly interfacing allows users to watch anything they choose from any location while at home, work, college or Worldwide via the Internet. Furthermore, the user's home TV entertainment center can be off while accessing it to watch favorite TV show, sports, movies, etc. This gateway also offers a great solution for people who are constantly on the go and want to gain access to their home TV entertainment center. Users can also use their mobile phones (must be compatible) to watch this entertainment. This requires special software to work. The downside relates to cost which will run into the $100s.
Option #2:
Live Satellite TV Feeds Networks. For people who don't want to buy expensive hardware or download software to their computers to watch Internet TV, this option offers instant access to all types of free live feeds. Users can watch all types of sports feeds, TV shows feeds, news feeds, radio feeds, movie and video feeds, etc. A very easy and safe process and the newest gateway to Internet TV. Connect directly to a Live Satellite TV Feeds Network where everything can be accessed from one location for ease of use. Users save a ton of time looking for free live feeds themselves. The merchant allows users to access his site (software) via membership uaing any Windows-based/Vista, MAC or Linux desktop/laptop computer with a Internet broadband connection. This requires a small one-time fee only without any monthly or recurring fees.
When using a laptop with wifi or broadband card/USB, users receive more TV savings, freedom, flexibility and mobility. This method offers users a way to watch Internet TV from any location while at home or when traveling across the globe. However if users prefer their TV sets, they can use an s-video card (TV-Out video or PCTV card) with coax cable to connect their computers and TV sets. However, this does not have the other advantages as option #1 and video quality can be good to excellent with access to 1000s of free live feeds.
Option #3:
PC Satellite TV Software. This FTA (free-to-air) proprietary software will work with Windows-based/Vista, MAC or Linux computers with an Internet broadband connection. Very similar to option #2, but users can install the software to any number of computers. This provides instant access to 1000s of free live/recorded Internet TV channels and on-demand videos, such as all sports, movies, TV shows, computer games, radio, music, etc. These software packages come with many perks and were designed for primarily for Internet TV and video enthusiasts.
Some software packages include P2P (peer-to-peer) platforms, and all of them include free bonuses with software and other links to TV media websites. As a result, the end-user may end up with 28,000+ free-to-air channels and videos. For a small one-time downloading fee, users can own the software with no other fees to pay. When using a laptop will allow watching Internet TV from any location while at home or on the go, including from any location across the globe.
Combine options #2 or #3 with option #1 and receive access to both home TV and Internet TV Locally, Nationally, and Internationally.

Computer Technology Improves Home Entertainment
Every time the computer industry tries to make inroads into the home entertainment center by offering products that are designed to use the home TV screen as a computer screen, consumers offer a lot of resistance. Yet, the computer industry persists as evidenced by Intel's Viiv technology and the fact that the media center version of Microsoft's Windows XP operating system and several versions of the Vista operating system are designed to make computers a part of the home entertainment center.
While consumers have been busy resisting the incursion of the home computer into the home entertainment center, computer equipment has been sneaking in anyway. This covert incursion can be seen in the form of newer forms of TV technology. DVD players, digital TV converters, satellite receivers, DVR's, and video gaming systems are all computers in some form or another.
One of the side effects of having all of this new technology so thoroughly computerizes is that there is an unprecedented level of compatibility between computers and the Internet, and the home entertainment center. For example, there are a variety of devices that take advantage of Internet connections to provide their users with more options. The TiVo is a good example of this. TiVos download their program guide information from the Internet and are even capable of being programmed to record specific TV shows from another location over the Internet. Some of the newer TiVos are even capable of downloading movies from the Internet to be shown on TV sets. Other devices that can do this include some versions of Sony HDTV sets, the Vudu, the Slingbox, Microsoft's Xbox 360, and several others. The Apple TV can fetch video from the home computer(which can get the video from the Internet or from a digital video camera), and the ability to download movies directly from the Internet is expected to be coming soon to the Play Station 3 from Sony.
Another interesting result of the overlap between computers and TV is the introduction of portable video devices. A portable video device is a hand held, battery powered portable device that can store video on a built in data storage system and then display it on a TV screen or its built in screen. These devices come in a variety of sizes and capacities. For example, there are versions with only two gigabytes of storage space and such small screens that you have to wonder why anyone gave them the capacity to play video. At the other end of the extreme are devices that have amply sized screens, the ability to store over a hundred hours of video, access the web over a WiFi connection, and even record video that's being played off of other devices and store it on their own hard disks. The data storage systems use either flash memory or more conventional hard disks, and the screens can either be conventional LCD technology or energy saving OLED screens. Some of these devices can even download video from some Digital Video Recorders if all of the compatibility issues are taken care of.
All of these devices show the benefits that computer technology can have when applied to home entertainment.
