Basically I want to access my parents tv and watch other channels without controlling it. If I'm watching my parents can't watch their favorite shows etc..

That wasn't the way Slingbox was designed...you have to change your parent's TV channels to get them on your laptop....
Of course you could buy another Cable or Satellite box and dedicate it to your Slingbox....You don't even need a TV set on that box, just your laptop.
