Question by crusader: Connection drops with my linksys WRT54g 2.2 wireless router?
Hi, i have cablevision with an optimum online motorola modem with optimum voice built in. With LINGO set at UT Starcom G729, SLINGBOX, and a hard wired desktop computer with windows Me. connected to my router. Now upstaires i have another desktop, that has a linksys wireless adapter. This router constantly has to be reset. It is driving me crazy. Do i need to get another router, maybe WRT54GL with DD-WRT firmware. Or maybe if i can add DD-WRT to my router. I have no idea if this would fix the problem. But this is really killing me. Help

Wireless routers are very hard to troubleshoot, the best place to start is turn off your computer's wireless card and plug in with a cord. If it works wired than it's a wifi issue, if it fails wired it's obviously not interference.

Your modem may use the MAC address to assign IPs. I had this with Cox high-speed internet.

If it cuts out both wired and wireless, try looking for "MAC cloning" on the router and set it to match whatever your computer was that was originally connected. This way your ISP will think you don't have a router and it shouldn't keep dropping. That fixed it for me on Cox.

Another problem I had at my parents' house is cordless phones. 2.4ghz phones (or neighbor's phones) can mess up wireless. Does it work if you hook up wired? If it works wired but not wireless try letting it sit for a while and check back. If the problem goes away it's interference - try changing the router's channel (1, 6, and 11 are best in theory) or getting a 5.8 Ghz, 900Mhz, or DECT 6.0 type cordless phone, they are less likely to interfere.

Less likely but still possible is a failed router. I did have one that had to be reset daily (different brand though) and when it was replaced under warranty, the problem was cured.

You may have to hook the modem directly to your computer and change it to bridge mode, then connect your router back up.

Which router for wireless and wired network?

Question by mad dog in the fog: Which router for wireless and wired network?
My house is wired with CAT5 and most rooms have at least one network connection. I want to set up a router so that I can have wireless access to the network but also be able to use the wired network for things devices like Slingbox and Sonos. Can someone describe how I should set this up - i.e. can I just set up a single router to do this or do I need to use a wireless router and a separate switch? I'd also like to know which routers/switches you'd recommend in the 0 price range.

How does one change from bridge mode to router mode within my router?

Question by RH: How does one change from bridge mode to router mode within my router?
I am trying to allow my slingbox to work in my router and the default gateway is set to public and needs to be set to private. The bridge mode I am told is not assigning a IP address, which is what I need for my slingbox to work.

Best answer:

Answer by chris h
1st give your slingbox a fixed ip on your inside network (192.168.1.xxx)

2) make sure the sling box knows the DNS servers assigned by your isp.

3) foward ports as appropriate for sling box

What wireless router should i get for a 6 person college house?

Question by Eric D: What wireless router should i get for a 6 person college house?
Our previous router needed to be reset all the time and eventually it just crapped out. We have 6 people in our house and it is 3 stories. We all have laptops, we play Xbox live, 5 of us have smart phones that connect to the network, and one person uses a Slingbox to watch TV which is also connected to the internet. Specific suggestions would be great. Thanks

go for a cisco or netgear router

also make sure you get a N router, dont get any G,A,B routers

N routers will also get you more range as to how far the signal will reach out to

and last but not least make sure you secure your network! use WPA or WPA2/PSK
DO NOT USE WEP!

can i hook up a slingbox and a sunrocket internet telephone to a netgear wireless router?

Question by RANDY C: can i hook up a slingbox and a sunrocket internet telephone to a netgear wireless router?

Answer by robspi46825
You can and it will work but both devices can take a lot of bandwidth. If you only use the slingbox internally, you should have no problem. If you are going to use both on the internet, check with your provider to see what your upload speed is. You should have at least 384K upload speed for both. They will function but not be 100%.

Will this setup for cable modem, router and hub (and Slingbox) work?

slingbox
by ~kate~

Question by leblongeezer: Will this setup for cable modem, router and hub (and Slingbox) work?
I have two routers connected serially (1st a Planet and 2nd a Linksys WiFi on another floor). Although I can access the Internet on either I never got the the two nets working well enough for printer and file sharing. It happens I have an 8 port nway switching-hub (Encore ENH908-NWY+) not being used, so my question, can I connect them this way:

Internet
|
Cable Modem
|
WiFi Router ------ Slingbox
|
hub --- computer 1 (file server) -------- shared printer
| |
| |____ computer 2
|
computer 3

In other words, will the router's DHCP server manage the computers connected on the hub as if they were simply connected to the ports of the modem?

PS: I don't know if this is stupid because I'm not exactly sure what a hub does. Anyway, could anybody help?
Stephen: the WiFi and Sling box on a different floor than the other computers and printer.
