Trender Awards? Announced: Apple, VidTel, and Sling Media Receive Multiple Honors — iPhone Wins “Mega-Trender Award”; Vista Wins “Trender Pretender Award”
Westford, MA (PRWEB) March 5, 2009
Trender Research™ Inc. (www.trenderresearch.com), a unique market research and consulting firm that combines expert analysis with the voice of everyday people, announced today the winners of the Trender Awards "Best of 2009". The Trender Awards™ were created to honor gadgets and services that are not only novel and technologically advanced, but also improve people's lives in some way and have appeal to everyday folks. Apple's iPhone claimed the highest honor with the Mega-Trender Award for "Best Overall New Product for Everyday Folks" and also won for "Best Mobile Product" and "Best User Interface". VidTel and Sling Media also won multiple award categories. VidTel's video phone service won for "Best Communications Product", the Trender-Blender Award for "Best Convergence Product", and for "Best Hoped-For Upcoming Product"; while Sling Media's SlingBox won the Trender-Gender Award for Men and its SlingCatcher earned Trender-Mender honors for "Most Improved Product Line". Click here for a complete list of winners: http://www.trenderresearch.com/profiles/blogs/trender-awards-winners.
Almost 100 tech products and services were considered after nomination by the Trenders or submitted by the vendors themselves. Awards were given for several tech categories including video, audio, photo, security, robotics, HDTVs, communications, mobile, GPS, and accessories, among others. All finalists are listed here: http://www.trenderresearch.com/profiles/blogs/trender-awards-finalists.
"It is our view that these products have a good chance of becoming mainstream, have already been embraced by everyday consumers, or have what it takes to be adopted by customers in their intended target markets," said Brian Mahony, Trender Research CEO and Chief Trender. "We tried to look beyond products and services that would only appeal to tech-savvy consumers and early-adopters. We looked at factors such as price, ease of installation/use, and customer support; but also psychological and marketing factors such as understandability, branding, appeal to a wide demographic set, and accessibility of channels."
Also awarded were several specialty honors including the Trender-Gender Award for Women (Lok8U's Nu.M8 GPS watch for keeping track of the kids) and the Tender-Trender Award for Kids (Nintendo's Wii game console). Microsoft's Vista operating system won the dubious Trender-Pretender Award for most overrated product. Also, the Trenders gave the Trender-Ender Award for "Death of a Product Category" to dedicated fax machines as the product category most likely to become obsolete.

Sling Media Receives $10.5 Million in Series A Funding from Mobius Venture Capital and DCM – Doll Capital Management
(PRWEB) November 9, 2004
San Mateo, CA (PRWEB0 November 9, 2004 -- Sling Media, Inc., a new kind of consumer electronics company creating thoughtful and innovative digital media solutions that empower consumers, announced today that it has received $ 10.5 million in Series A funding from DCM - Doll Capital Management, Mobius Venture Capital and undisclosed strategic investors. Terms of the investment were not disclosed.
The company is gearing up for its first product introduction -- The Slingbox Personal Broadcaster. The Slingbox is an intelligent device that allows users to enjoy their entire live TV experience from any device, via any network, anywhere in their home or around the world. The Slingbox connects to and Âplaceshifts content from any cable box, satellite receiver, or personal video recorder (e.g. TiVo). The first sneak preview of the Slingbox occurred this past June at the Wall Street JournalÂs ÂD: All Things Digital conference where it was exceptionally well received. Sling Media anticipates the introduction of the Slingbox Personal Broadcaster during Q1 2005.
ÂWe are pleased to be able to play a role in bringing to market one of the brightest companies on the technology horizon today, said Ryan McIntyre, principal at Mobius Venture Capital. ÂSling Media is approaching digital convergence from a unique perspective and is committed to creating a more liberating consumer digital technology experience.Â
ÂWe invested in Sling Media because we believe the company's technology finally offers consumers an easy way to view or listen to their favorite recorded and live television programs via any Internet-connected device," said David Chao, Managing General Partner of DCM. "DCM is thrilled to be an investor and a partner of this management team that is committed to delivering one of the first true killer-applications for the ubiquitous broadband market."
Sling Media was founded in 2004 by brothers Blake and Jason Krikorian, and Bhupen Shah. Shah, who previously founded pioneering digital media companies Dazzle and Emuzed, brings more than 22 years of experience in consumer technology products. Blake Krikorian began his career at General Magic, which created the Magic Cap operating system for mobile intelligent communicators. Blake later co-founded the Philips Mobile Computing Group, a company funded by Philips Electronics. Jason KrikorianÂs career started at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, where he worked in corporate securities law. Subsequently, Jason moved to The Boston Consulting Group, where he advised Fortune 500 companies in the automotive and retail arenas. Blake and JasonÂs most recent venture, id8 Group, was a leading industry consultancy that advised and defined digital media products for AOL, Microsoft, Hitachi and others, ranging from digital imaging to mobile entertainment devices and smart phones.
ÂAn enormous gap exists between what is possible with todayÂs digital entertainment technology and its usability by consumers. It is our position that CE should stand as much for consumer experience as it does for consumer electronics, remarked CEO Blake Krikorian. ÂWe founded Sling Media to deliver on the promise of the digital media lifestyle, and to provide thoughtfully-executed solutions that enhance our customers lives. We are delighted to have assembled such forward-looking investors who join us in our mission to vastly improve the consumers digital technology experience.Â
