VPN, getting U.S. IP from abroad, streaming content?
Question by fech0008: VPN, getting U.S. IP from abroad, streaming content?
I am currently living in Okinawa, Japan. There are a few sites I like to stream content from that require an IP address from the U.S. I have found a couple free web-based VPN clients that help me get around this problem, but they have a couple drawbacks - 1) they have a bandwidth cap and 2) they are too slow for me to continue streaming my Slingbox and Vonage phone.
What I'm looking for (and I'm willing to pay a reasonable price if there's no such thing as a free service that offers all of it) is a VPN client that:
-- will give me a US IP address
-- has no bandwidth cap (or a very high one)
-- that allows me to split tunnel so I can continue to stream content that does not require a U.S. IP at the normal high speed rate my fiber optic carrier gives me. I'll also need to know how to set up the split tunneling on my iMac G5
(if this client has no bandwidth cap and a very high speed, then the split tunneling is not necessary)
Thanks in advance for an advice!
KF

I only know half your question.
the mac os DOES NOT support multiple gateway address. So your ideal to split tunneling is impossible.

New Streaming Media Recorder Downloads and Automatically Names Online Video & Audio from Millions of Sites
San Anselmo, CA (PRWEB) August 15, 2008
Applian Technologies today announced the release of Replay Media Catcher 3 with the ability to capture online video and audio streams from more sites that any other software. According to Applian Technologies, all media from the major Flash and Windows Media video and music sites can be recorded with Replay Media Catcher.
Included in this release is a new SmartNames technology, which the company claims is able to determine the name of the audio MP3 file or video file in most cases, and tag the recording accurately.
Replay Media Catcher advertises a simple one-click recording interface. Customers are instructed to click the Start Recording button, and then play the streaming video or MP3 audio to capture. Once Replay Media Catcher detects the media stream, it saves a playable video or audio file on the PC hard drive, and the users can then go in search of other media to record. The Replay Media Catcher web page claims the software can record multiple streams simultaneously, limited only by the speed of the customer's internet connection. Also included is Applian's FLV Player, which lets customers watch their recorded Flash videos.
"Replay Media Catcher is the first ever production software to be able to capture online video and audio streams from virtually all the top-tier content sites," said Bill Dettering, CEO of Applian Technologies. "These unprotected, unencrypted files have been previously impossible to record for your personal use, and now Replay Media Catcher makes it possible to archive and enjoy more great online video without having to be connected to the internet."
Replay Media Catcher is available for download and immediate purchase from replay-media-catcher.com for $ 39.95. A free demo is also available, which is fully functional for capturing YouTube videos. Replay Media Catcher requires a PC running Windows 2000, XP or Vista.

How to speed up international video streaming?
Question by Dan: How to speed up international video streaming?
I am trying to stream television based in US via a slingbox. When I do it in the US it works great and I can get streaming speeds around 3Mb. When I go to the UK, I can only get about 250kbps. My upload and download broadband is almost identical in both locations. I've heard it's because the stream is sent through several servers before getting to UK. How can I increase the speed from London? Can I connect directly to the US server somehow?
Best answer:
Answer by JoelKatz
Unfortunately, SNATT is very sensitive to delay. Packets just take longer to get from the US to the UK, and this delay prevents the SNATT protocol from reaching the speeds necessary.
Think of it as trying to drive a car but where every time you turn the steering wheel, the car turns two seconds later. How fast could you drive? There's nothing you can do to reduce the delay, it's caused by the length of the trip (miles in fiber) and speed of light.
However, you may be able avoid the need for SNATT. If you can instead use TCP or UDP, these protocols do a better job of compensating for delay.
One way is to setup a VPN between the two networks and access the slinbox over the VPN (by contacting it on an IP address routed over the VPN). There have been reports of success with this approach and slingboxes.
Another way is to establish TCP and/or UDP port forwarding on your router to your slingbox.

How do I stream video from a Sony camcorder through a streaming website without requiring a computer?
Question by vjanand: How do I stream video from a Sony camcorder through a streaming website without requiring a computer?
I have a Sony MiniDV camcorder with Firewire or USB output. I'd like to stream this video live using a live streaming website such as livestream.com without having to hook up the camera to a computer. In other words, is there an appliance like the Slingbox that can take video from the camcorder, connect to the internet and directly stream it out or stream it through one of the live streaming sites?
Best answer:
Answer by Little Dog
Since you did not tell us which Sony camcorder, we don't know if it supports USB streaming. Typically, the USB port is used only for trnasferring stills off a memory card.
I don't think the SlingBox supports firewire.
The other option that should work is to connect the camcorder's composite AV cable to one of the SlingBox's composite video (and audio) input...
Since we don't know what you will be using the camcorder's streamed video for, you need to know that video camcorders typically have an auto-power down mode that is designed to protect the camcorder's electronics... Many times, the timer on the automatic power down is not settable to "Never".

Slingbox/Internet Streaming question?
Question by Mike Baggins: Slingbox/Internet Streaming question?
I have a question about the slingbox and internet streaming of television picutres. The slingbox works very well for me in terms of quality and clarity of broadcast. The problem I have with it is the time lag or buffering. I use it almost exclusively for live sports and the buffering can make this a frustrating process. Is there anyway that i can 'broadcast' or recieve my cable tv at home through the internet in real time?
Best answer:
Answer by Steve
From your description, it is a little unclear about whether you are talking about the normal delay of a few seconds when you first start streaming the video from your slingbox, or whether you are talking about repeated pauses in the broadcast for rebuffering because the bandwidth between your slingbox and the computer or device you are watching it on is not big/wide enough.
If you're talking about repeated pauses for rebuffering, then the only good way to solve that is to buy more bandwidth, either on the network where your slingbox lives, or on the network where you are watching it, or both.
If on the other hand you're talking about the one-time buffering delay when watching anything on slingbox, in my experience, the video from my slingbox is usually less than ten seconds behind the actual broadcast. That buffered delay is necessary for the video and audio to stream smoothly to you and will occur no matter how wide your bandwidth is, although more bandwidth may shorten the time required for buffering a little. If this is what you're talking about, I'm a little surprised that it is a problem. Are you trying to watch the streamed video while sitting in the arena or listening on the radio or something else that makes the delay obvious?

Sling Media is investigating reports of Slingbox PROs receiving either no signal or an error screen from your HD video source through the Slingbox HD Connect A/V input.
In most cases, we are finding that the set top box is limiting the functionality of the component out ports when the HDMI port is in use. But we are still trying to identify which set-top box and TV combinations are problematic.
You can work around the issue by using the component pass-through function of the Slingbox HD Connect to your HDTV. To do this, connect your set-top box to your Slingbox HD Connect via component cables. And then attach component cables from the Slingbox HD Connect to your HDTV.
Hope this heps..
