Question by DtommyD: Codecs Manager? Is there such a thing? Video problems - Orb.com / WinTV7.2 with extend, ++?
For "Windows 7" 32bit-
WinTV7.2 with Extend, Slingbox (always solid), Orb.com / Orblive (iphone), Ustream Producer, Windows Media Center,

So I have a lot of video programs that seem to have conflicts at times. I can't really blame the computer for being confused. Microsoft doesn't help the situation as far as I can tell. It's turned into a "Black Art" to make it all work. "Hope" shouldn't be in my tool-belt and I'm sick of this. I use these all for different things so yes I need them all. Not usually at the same time of course. My only semi breakthroughs are stopping a program at start-up or closing then restarting, and reinstalling so the last install takes precedence (hopefully). It's also not a Windows 7 issue as I just left Vista and it's all the same. It's a Codec Cornucopia Cavalcade of CR@P. The Quad C as it were.
Does anyone have advice on how to get a better handle on this? Am I missing something? I've looked for programs/utilities on download.com and I got nuth'in. I hope I'm just not searching right. Is there a way to force codec sharing or duplicate the codecs and separate them?
Any tips / tricks you may know of would be helpful.

I love computers but there a few things I didn't want to know anything about. Networking, Codecs, Registry +++ I now feel dumber knowing what I know.

The more you learn, the more you realize you don't know. That's how it goes :)

I've never totally understood codec management, but have had three strategies in the past:

Download a codec pack - which will install all the common codecs and a bunch more you've never heard of. It'll warn you about conflicts too. I used to use the nemo codec pack, then switched to the k-lite codec pack, which still seems to be going strong.

After that era, I switched to installing exactly the codecs I needed, which was generally just xvid and lame (the acm version, so it's recognized by windows and shows up in programs).

Now I just use vlc media player, which has it's own copies of codecs rather than asking windows for them.

Since you're using multiple video programs, I'd suggest going for that k-lite codec pack.

Good luck!

Although there aren’t really antonyms for nouns, what is the closest to the opposite of a “box”?

Question by : Although there aren't really antonyms for nouns, what is the closest to the opposite of a "box"?
Ok, I would like to clarify the context of the question. The question arose when my coworker saw that I had bought a "SlingCatcher", which is a device that takes electronic media and puts it on your TV. A "SlingBox" on the other hand is a device that takes TV and streams it to your computer. We were commenting on how these 2 devices were diametrically opposed, but that we were not sure "Box" and "Catcher" were opposites. Therefore, we wanted to know if SlingMedia should have come up with a better name than "SlingCatcher". Please fill in the blank: "Sling____" is the opposite of "SlingBox".

Is there an adapter for digital audio (orange) to RCA (yellow & white)?

Question by pandera: Is there an adapter for digital audio (orange) to RCA (yellow & white)?
My cable box has only component or digital audio out (orange RCA style and the black square kind), but my Slingbox AV has only RCA or S Video in. There is an S video out on the cable box, so I've got the video working but is it possible to get the audio (red/white) connected to the digital audio with an adapter or something? I don't care about the quality as I am only going to be watching it in a small window on a computer.

Best answer:

Answer by TV guy
There is NO way your cable box does not have analog audio out.
It uses the SAME audio out whether you use component, or composite, or s-video.

(the only way to go from digital audio to analog stereo audio is through an AV receiver).

Is there an better alternative for coaxial cables?

Question by Jeremiah P: Is there an better alternative for coaxial cables?
Will Slingbox work?
I hate coaxial cables...

Best answer:

Answer by TV guy
hate is a rather strong word for a cable!!
Coax is needed if the signal is modulated (like from an antenna or cable).
So it all depends. If the source has both Coax and regular video outputs, use the regular video outputs.

Are there any alternatives to the Sony LocationFree Player?

slingbox
by Jeremy Toeman

Question by dawpa2000: Are there any alternatives to the Sony LocationFree Player?
I have a Sony LocationFree Player LF-B10 (new, unopened so far). I'm currently worried about the multiple, limited licensing fees with this device. Are there any other software alternative players to view the streamed content for this LF-B10 (maybe open-source software)?

Also, are there any hardware alternatives to the Sony LocationFree Player for Internet / Network TV streaming? I've heard of Slingbox. Anyone have more information?

Best answer:

Answer by kaos713
You can always just use VLC Media Player, it doubles as a streaming server, you could set it up on a separate PC that you can leave on all the time, put it on your home network, then you can access files from anywhere.

Also, you could get a mediagate, it's a network drive that is also a media player, plugs straight into your tv.

It all depends on your needs really.

HP SL4278N – does it work in the UK and is there a UK vendor?

by Synthesis Studios

Question by MARK B: HP SL4278N - does it work in the UK and is there a UK vendor?
I've seen an HP 42" LCD 1080p television for sale in the US - model SL4278N. What makes this different is it's ethernet/ wireless 802.11 n capability which would fit nicely into my wireless network connecting to my slingbox pro that pipes out HD pictures.

Does anyone know if this works in the UK (ie accepts PAL signals / UK power) and where I can find one?

Thanks

Best answer:

Answer by TV guy
This is basically an NTSC TV, so it will not work in the UK.

Is there any way to get American TV; Survivor & Apprentice (current season) in Germany?

Question by Kristy K: Is there any way to get American TV; Survivor & Apprentice (current season) in Germany?
We will be in Germany for 2 years and I am completely addicted to these shows. Is there any way to get American TV through Sattelite or cable? So far i've had no luck with asking American Cable/Internet Companies and Slingbox only works with Computers so I couldn't tape the shows in the middle of the night in Germany (time change). I'd really appreciate some help.

This is important to me since I don't speak any German so please only answer if you have a possible solution. Thanks.

I am sorry, but the only way would be probably downloading it from the Internet. Some TV shows are available for download at http://www.tv.com (you can download it to the iTune). As with others, well, ahm, the way is to use file-sharing, but I'm not sure if it is advisable.

Is there anywhere to watch nfl games online?

Question by sixerman7: Is there anywhere to watch nfl games online?
I'm going to be at college next year and I want to watch my Philly Eagles play without having to buy a Slingbox and DirecTV isn't offered. If you're not going to help me try and find an answer, don't bother responding that I need to get a slingbox or DirecTV because I know those options already

Best answer:

Answer by William
It seems like last year they offered this but it was a paid service. Other than that you can watch the play by play on espn.com or nfl.com that updates every play.
The best way is to hit your favorite sports bar, if you have a Buffalo Wild Wings in your town for example and camp out and they will have the full package.

The Hauppauge HD-PVR is by far the best option for capturing HD video onto your pc or mac period. It can capture 1080i HD video with surround sound. It is a little pricey however at 8 on amazon http://www.amazon.com/Hauppauge-1212-Definition-Personal-Recorder/dp/B0018LX0DY/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1233979101&sr=8-1 but I have 2 of them for doing HD cable on my HTPC and I love it. Although it's pricey it captures really nice HD video with surround sound in H.264 format. Even at 0 its still the cheapest option currently on the market for capturing HD video. It really is your only/best option. Plus it works on windows and Mac. Oh, PS Apple TV does not capture video and I'm not sure if the slingbox Pro-HD software for mac is out of beta yet. Basically go with the HD-PVR you wont be disappointed.
