Hi I live overseas and have been offered both a slingbox pro and a tivo seiries 2 I was just wondering if I could use the actual tivo as a sling catcher. Like to watch my american cable overseas.

Simply no.
The Series 2 has only MPEG2 video codecs, and can only download MPEG2 from the internet and videos servers in your house (they need to serve files in a specific way TiVo needs).
While the Series 3/HD units can stream MPEG4, they currently lack software to "catch" Sling.
What you would use the Series 2 for is to record the TV you receive in America (albeit in SD), so you can watch it at your convenience over Slingbox, on your computer or with a proper Sling Catcher.

im looking to get the 0 slingbox tuner, but id like to know if i can record cable tv on my mac similar to a tivo, either with slingboxes mac os x beta software or other (free) third party software. id like to use the recordings to burn seasons of my favorite shows.

Is has no recording capablilites to your computer. You can use Slingbox to stream content anywhere in the world. You can use it to recrd things on your tivo and stream anywhere, but you cant use it in any way to record anything.

Has anybody done this? My question assumes sufficient bandwidth on both ends and a Netflix subscription. I've seen many posts from people who have used it with various DVRs but nobody who has done this.
Also, must the user leave his or her computer at home for Slingbox to work?

in theory it should work.and no you dont need any viewing device at home by your statement i guess you talking about a lap-top leaving it at home so no you just need the slingbox connected to the internet the output on the slingbox is a pass-thru port since you dont control the channels with it for your tv and your slingbox needs to be after your tivo so you can control the tivo with the IR leads- i dont have a tivo i have a computer based pvr and i dont have a android phone

ReplayTV came out around the same time as TiVo but hasn't enjoyed as much success and name recognition.

Slingbox is hardware. You don't download hardware.

It doesnt have the capablility to do that from the Manufacturer. But there is a Slingbox that you can buy that will play things from your DVR at home.
Now keep in mind that any signal playing through your computer can somehow be recorded. So I am sure it can be done it just depends on if you can find the software to do it.

Given the right cables - it should work with anything, apart from High Def.

The TiVo has a bunch of outputs. I have this same setup and I used the s-video output to connect the TiVo to the TV, and the composite (yellow/red/white) outputs to connect the TiVo to the SlingBox.
