Tivo / Slingbox remote is not working. I can only get the remote to MUTE, do I have the sensor on wrong?

is slingbox at all like a tivo?
im looking to get the $100 slingbox tuner, but id like to know if i can record cable tv on my mac similar to a tivo, either with slingboxes mac os x beta software or other (free) third party software. id like to use the recordings to burn seasons of my favorite shows.
