My goal is to get rid of cable TV, keep my cable internet, and somehow hook up my computer to my living room TV set so I can watch a show from the internet on my nice TV screen while on the couch. What do I need to get to do this? A slingbox or what?

It depends what online TV service(s) you mean.
There are a number of set-top boxes (Apple TV, Roku, Boxee, WDTV Live+, most or all the current TV game consoles, many Blu-Ray players), which each work with some services, or through your PC with PlayOn.
You can also connect your PC to your TV directly, with a VGA or HDMI cable. Search here or elsewere for details on that. That question is asked and answered a lot.
A Slingbox is for the other way, to remotely watch TV from a traditional TV source (such as a cable box) on a computer.
You should look into an antenna to get your local channels for free. You can get a tuner card for your computer to record OTA channels.

Equip you computer with a video card and a sound card, hook to your tv and stereo. Get a wireless keyboard and mouse. Find your computer on the input menu and away you go

Me and my roommate want to watch sporting events and stuff, but we don't have TVs in our rooms. What would be the best way to be able to watch TV on our PC's? We do have access to TV's that we could put a slingbox-type device on, however we don't want to be forced to watch the same thing that they're watching on the host TV or force the host TV to watch what we're watching. Any suggestions?

Slingbox is hardware. You don't download hardware.
