Sling box takes your stalite or cable from your house and send it over the internet to YOUR laptop . its for people who need local TV when they are onthe road or who pay for premium channels and dont spend the money at the hotels for those channels . thats basicly it , It doesnt steal TV or any bootleg crap like that . Just hook it to your tv ..run the software on the laptop and get TV anywhere inthe worls on your own laptop.
The best thing to go is to go to http://www.slingbox.com and view the demo, or do a youtube search for slingbox, there are many demos and tutorials on there.
I just set this up for my dad took all of 20 minutes. I did need tech support for a router issue. I went to their site, selected live chat and “shared my desktop” The technician was on my PC and had me set up in 3 minutes.
You connect a source, in this case a Direct TV HDDVR using the red and white audio cable and s-video, connected my router and pluggged it in. You install the sling player on whatever pc or laptop (that is internet connected) and run through the set up. Within minutes you are online.
If you have another PC or laptop you go to slinxbox.com and download the player on that pc or laptop, enter the name of you slingbox and the long ID (funrished by slingbox) and the password and you are connected to the device.
You can do everything using slingbox that you could do at home using the connected device. Its jsut like sitting at home with the remote in your hand.
You tell it what device you are using and the model number and it installs the remote control on your pc, the same one that you use at home, its pretty cool.
I recommend the slingbox, very well packaged and fairly easy set up.
