What will be the major difference between 2 and 4 GB of RAM?

Question by bigbambooj: What will be the major difference between 2 and 4 GB of RAM?
I am looking at buying a laptop today and have the option to upgrade the RAM from 2 to 4 GB. What performance features will that help me with? The computer will mainly be used for general tasks, word processing and internet, and live video streaming with a slingbox over the internet. It comes with a 1.4GHz Core 2 Duo processor. Do I need the upgrade?

Go for the upgrade. RAM is relatively inexpensive at this point, and if you do any upgrading or memory intensive tasks at some point you'll find you need that extra RAM.

  1. I would go for the extra RAM. RAM is what gives you faster speeds on the internet, and especially for streaming video.

  2. 4 GB is usually better to up gaming and video performance. if your just doing normal tasks and not gaming or anything 4GB would be a waste of money, so stick with 2

  3. It depends, you will probably be happy you upgraded it in a couple of years…but you won’t see any difference if you are a uni-tasker. Most applications don’t need 4GB but when you run media player, internet explorer, several word documents, excels spreadsheets, powerpoints…etc at once, it helps! But since your computer seems basic, and if it’s a netbook, unless it’s cheap don’t upgrade as RAM won’t be the issue!

  4. you’ll need the extra ram with that small processor.

  5. It will have Win7 so you will want 4 gigs RAM for good performance.
Live video streaming will require the faster internet connection packages.

  6. If you are a light computer user I would say you could get away with 2 GB and then add more if you run into problems. If you plan on doing intensive tasks such as editing videos, playing computer games or like to have multiple programs and tasks going at one time, spring for the upgrade.

  7. 4 GB is usually better to up gaming and video performance. i
