What wireless router should i get for a 6 person college house?

Question by Eric D: What wireless router should i get for a 6 person college house?
Our previous router needed to be reset all the time and eventually it just crapped out. We have 6 people in our house and it is 3 stories. We all have laptops, we play Xbox live, 5 of us have smart phones that connect to the network, and one person uses a Slingbox to watch TV which is also connected to the internet. Specific suggestions would be great. Thanks

go for a cisco or netgear router

also make sure you get a N router, dont get any G,A,B routers

N routers will also get you more range as to how far the signal will reach out to

and last but not least make sure you secure your network! use WPA or WPA2/PSK
DO NOT USE WEP!

  1. With the volume of traffic being processed, stay away from home grade routers. This means do not buy Linksys (the Cisco home grade device), Netgear, D Link, Belkan, Sonic Wall.

My persona preference is the Adtran Netvanta 3120 router with the Netvanta 150 wireless access points. A 3 story house will most likely require at least 2 wireless access points to perform. I would put one on the third floor and one on the first floor. If problems are noted on the second floor, then add one there.

The Netvanta 150 wireless access points can be configured for PoE so you just run a PoE enabled network cable to it from one of the Netvanta 3120 network ports.

This is a commercial grade, business class device and is very capable. Configuration can be done in CLI or via Web GUI. Adtran’s post sale tech support is extremely good in case you get stuck.

A commercial grade device costs more than home devices. They last a lot longer as well. Over the unit’s lifetime you would have replaced the home device at least 6 times.

Plan to pay $400 for the Netvanta 3120 and $150 for each of the Netvanta 150 access points.
