What would be the best laptop for my needs under $1,000?
Question by : What would be the best laptop for my needs under ,000?
Requirements:
Price: anything under ,000
Screen: Needs to be very bright and vivid because I stream netflix and tv via slingbox. Also very large. Screen is probably the most important factor
Speed: Something that will let me browse the internet with my 15 mbps connection swiftly. Also should be great at handling HD video (netflix streaming, slingbox, youtube, NO editing). Internet browsing and streaming video are what I will mostly be doing.
Design: Don't care that much about design although the prettier the better obviously
Battery life: not important
Gaming: not important
Brand: not important
Portability: not important
Any help will be greatly appreciated. 10 points to best answer!

If the screen is the most important thing then you might want to look into buying the computer itself(like the motherboard and all that jazz) and the screen separate. As far as streaming videos, it really comes down to your internet connection and what kind of graphics card. Sorry thats kind of where my experience ends and i don't want to give you bad info so I hope that helps answer at least half your question. As far as graphics cards go look under ATI and GEFORCE models as those are generally the best and most affordable.

I have had my HP for quite a while. I just traded in my old gateway laptop at bestbuy for 80, do you have an old laptop? they have a trade in program
anyway, check out the bestbuy website, get a computer screen at least 17″, you can always adjust brightness and most of the modern ones come with what you want, you also want something with a lot of speed and long battery life since if you watch videos the laptop battery dies and gets hot. perhaps you want a mac instead?

the best lap top which suits you is Gateway NV7915u which has 17″ large screen which provides you a good view.
Advantages:
Intel Core i3 processor (we got an i5, maybe you will too) – both these processors far outperform the AMD Turion II.
Faster system bus, more cache memory, and faster (DDR3) RAM
(Compared to Gateway) RAM expandable to 8GB (as opposed to 4GB) – this will come into play several years from now when you need more power and RAM is cheaper.
HD MI output – you can use this to hook your laptop up to HD TV or Projector for movies, etc.
4 USB ports
Energy Star qualification (most laptops should have this by now)
Good keyboards/ touch pad/ sound & speakers
Windows 7 64-bit: Windows 7 is solid, uses resources better than XP and way better than Vista. 64-bit processing has a significant performance advantage, particularly with multitasking (parallel computing) – just be sure to buy/download 64-bit software (will also run 32-bit software if no 64-bit version is available).
Dis advantages:
1.(Compared to HP) Lesser battery life (6-cell as opposed to 8-cell battery), 2 hours instead of 5+. .
2.(Compared to HP) Slightly slower hard drive (5400 RPM instead of 7200)
(Compared to HP) No blue-ray support
3.No ATI graphics card (although benchmark tests show that for every day PC (office) tasks, the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD actually outperforms the ATI. So, the ATI card advantage is primarily for 3D performance/ gaming, etc.)
4.(Compared to HP) HP has slightly better LED screen
you can get this for 599.99 $
the main competitors for this lap top are Gateway NV7316u ($579.99) and the HP Pavilion dv7-3165dx ($779.99).
once have a look at them also before taking the decision

I found the website for the HP G72 for $599.99:

As for hardware, it will easily meet your needs. Most computers nowadays are very fast when it comes to internet browsing and streaming videos. Your internet connection speed is probably has the greatest impact on your browsing and streaming. Unfortunately, like many other 17.3″ laptops the screen resolution is 1600×900 and falls short of 1080p (900p only). On the plus side, it is an LED screen which is supposedly not as harsh as an LCD screen. If you want, you can customize it for a blue-ray drive which costs a little more.
If you can find an 18″ laptop, it will probably be able to play 1080p. I just can’t seem to find one, though I’ve seen them… then there are other smaller laptops that have an option for higher resolution screens, but I can’t find one right now either…
