Question by leblongeezer: Will this setup for cable modem, router and hub (and Slingbox) work?
I have two routers connected serially (1st a Planet and 2nd a Linksys WiFi on another floor). Although I can access the Internet on either I never got the the two nets working well enough for printer and file sharing. It happens I have an 8 port nway switching-hub (Encore ENH908-NWY+) not being used, so my question, can I connect them this way:

Internet
|
Cable Modem
|
WiFi Router ------ Slingbox
|
hub --- computer 1 (file server) -------- shared printer
| |
| |____ computer 2
|
computer 3

In other words, will the router's DHCP server manage the computers connected on the hub as if they were simply connected to the ports of the modem?

PS: I don't know if this is stupid because I'm not exactly sure what a hub does. Anyway, could anybody help?
Stephen: the WiFi and Sling box on a different floor than the other computers and printer.

Why not plug everything into the router?

  1. Don’t see why it shouldn’t, but if it doesn’t, try connecting ur hub to the cable modem and then the rest from there or just get rid of the hub, seems like the router has enough ports for all ur computers

  2. Should not be a problem. Are you facing one?

  3. Hubs are usually used for crating a small network like that except sometimes the internet would be in computer 1, and the other 2 computers would be connecting to the internet via the hub, then computer 1, then the modem/router

but if your using WiFi you could just use the wireless for the entire network and you can create a network in a difrent style

    internet—cable modem—- WiFi router
    | | |
    computer 1 computer 2 computer 3
    |
    shared printer

here there is no Hub, instead all 3 computers are connecting using WiFi and networking to computer 1 for the printer

WiFi routers are a very handy networking tool :) (i find it alot easyer than Hubs)

you can even get WiFi to work on your printer and it would class as another device, so you wouldnt have to worry about it going through Computer 1 1st, instead it would be stand alone and all the computers would be connecting to the printer

  4. The DHCP going to manage them … Maybe U need some Configration in Ur 3 PC’s.
1st : Make the 3 PC have Same work Group .. How ?? Just right click on My Computer then Choose Properties. then Computer name then Change ,
Just make Sure the 3 PC have the Same Name .
    This Step required Restart.
2nd : Check the IP’s . Make Sure that they All have IP & it’s not Dynamic one.
3rd : Check Ur Firewall . & make New Rule for Ur Firewall to Accept the Connection from the Other PC’s.
** Maybe the Two Router make that Conflict … Contact Ur ISP then .
More Details U can Contact me.

  5. I feel that it should work.. but you need to set up and configure the network correctly. Get some ideas on how to set up home network here with this tutorial: http://www.home-network-help.com/home-network.html
