Service Needed

11 posts in this topic

Hello guys (and girls?). First of all I'd like to let you know that I am very new to this and I have little to no idea whatsoever about Sling. So let me tell you how I landed here. I live in a small town of 15,000 population in North Dakota. There are 2 Cable TV service providers here. One that I currently subscribe to has ridiculously high rates, and the other does not provide a cable box/DVR. I've been looking at other options. I would not like to go with satellite TV due to high winds and heavy snow in the area. I've thought about subscribing to USTVNOW for Roku but they only offer up to 28 channels and don't offer some of the networks I like to watch, like TruTV. I found this site after doing a lot of research on the internet. So, my question is, am I in the right place? Will the SlingPlayer app on Roku be of any use? Thank you!

Taz

I'd like to think that you're in the right place.

The Slingbox is a great technology that allows you to watch your television anywhere. The Slingbox works by connecting to a cable box, antenna service, or similar to stream the channels available through that service to you through the internet, regardless of where you live. Thus you can watch your favorite TV shows and other content, just as if you were watching your own TV, while away. While viewing a Slingbox, you have a virtual remote to use features of the cable or satellite service with ease, and (depending on both your internet connection speeds and the speeds of the Slingbox host) you'll get good picture quality, in some cases TV-quality.

In the case of this forum, the technology of the Slingbox is used by forum users here to stream mainly cable and satellite services (from a number of countries, I might add) to other users of the forum who request them in return for use of their Slingbox (a "Slingbox exchange", "Slingbox trade", or "Slingbox sharing") or in return for payment (a "Slingbox rental").

In your case, it seems that you're looking for an alternative to actual cable services in your area, which are pricey and lack features available in other parts of the country, satellite services, due to unpredictable weather interfering with your service, and sites like USTVNOW which don't offer the channel selection you want. To me it looks like Slingbox rentals have the potential to solve both of your problems here.

I'm not the most experienced here when it comes to Slingbox rentals, but I can say that a lot of our renters offer good cable packages (usually from the East Coast, so expect a potential time difference on things like the EPG). Some offer premium channels, DVRs, and "dedicated" services (where the cable box connected to the Slingbox is not connected to a TV, which eliminates the risk of infringing on the box owner's own viewing and gives you exclusive access). While these features may be offered, it's up to you to decide what features you want and compare features and pricing that suits you.

I'm not very experienced with the Slingbox/SlingPlayer apps for other devices, but I think that there are some types of Slingboxes which don't work with one or more of the apps, so if you're looking specifically to watch on, say, a Roku device hooked up to your TV, you'll have to discuss whether or not that Slingbox works with that device and app before you make a decision.

I hope that this information helps you out in deciding whether or not to use a Slingbox for your television viewing needs.

Hi, Slingplayer app works great with roku if you have a smart phone or other device to relay it through to your TV, or to watch on your phone itself.

I'm not sure what charges if any are incurred while your phone is on, and it must be turned on for Roku to get the wifi signal.

Google Roku slingplayer app, App is $15,  roku channel is free.

I have a slingbox available you can try out, email me if you wish to try it.

I don't understand why I would need my phone to run the Slingplayer channel in Roku.

If needed, my IPS also has a 50Mbps plan that I could upgrade to instead.
