What is a Slingbox?
A Slingbox is an audio-video (AV) device that you can use to watch and control your TV wherever you are, on your desktop or laptop computer, smartphone, tablet, and more. This is called placeshifting. The Slingbox connects to your TV's set-top box, your TV, and your home network. After it's all set up, all you need is an Internet connection to watch your TV anywhere – live sports, local channels, your DVR's recorded content … even on-demand programming. What are the differences between Slingbox 350 and Slingbox 500?
With both Slingbox models you can placeshift your TV anywhere in the world in sparkling 1080p HD. The Slingbox 500 adds built-in wireless, HDMI connectors, and additional on-screen features like SlingProjector and SlingSync. For a detailed comparison chart go to

Does work with both Windows and Mac? Will it work with my Slingbox?
You can set up your Slingbox and watch TV using with either Windows or Mac computers.

We call this feature Watch on - it is optimized to work with these Slingbox models:

    Slingbox 500
    Slingbox 350
    Slingbox PRO-HD
    Slingbox SOLO
    Slingbox PRO

If you have an earlier Slingbox model (like the original Slingbox Classic, Slingbox TUNER, or Slingbox AV), you should be able to set up your Slingbox and use Watch on (if you're using a Windows PC). But these Slingbox models aren't supported with and haven't been tested with it.

Instead, we recommend that you use the earlier desktop versions of SlingPlayer (either Windows or Mac OS) to watch your TV with these earlier Slingbox models. Unfortunately, we no longer develop that older software, but we still make it available here on our website for the older Slingbox models. Just use the search bar to find it.

Can I access the Slingbox from another country?
Yes – all you need is an Internet connection. You can access the Slingbox via a laptop, desktop, smartphone or tablet. As well as via connected devices and watch on another TV.

I just bought SlingPlayer for my mobile device (iPhone, Android, iPad, etc.)? Why do I need
If you're using SlingPlayer on your mobile device (like a an Android Tablet or an iPad, etc.) you still need to use to configure your Slingbox and set up your home router properly, so that you can watch your TV anywhere you go. It's a one-time setup process which only takes a few minutes. A Slingbox can't be fully configured via the mobile players.

Can the Slingbox control my DVR?
Yes, with its built-in IR emitter the Slingbox can control all the functions of your set-top box. You can access your program guide, recorded shows, even on-demand features. It's just like sitting in front of your TV.

Can the home viewer watch a different channel than the remote viewer?
The home and remote viewer can only watch different channels if the Slingbox is connected to a secondary set-top box, one that is not being used by the home viewer. If the remote viewer is accessing the same set-top box as the home viewer, they both have to watch the same programming.

How many viewers can use a Slingbox at once?
Only one remote user can access the Slingbox at a time. This article gives more details: The Slingbox is designed for one viewer at a time.

Can the virtual remote feature within SlingPlayer control a set-top box and a TV?
The virtual remote can only control the video source configured during setup, and not any other devices.

What are the technical specifications and network requirements of the Slingbox?

Do I need a set-top box for the Slingbox?
You can connect to practically any audio-video (AV) source. You can hook up the Slingbox to thousands of compatible standard-definition (SD) or high-definition (HD) sources, including DVRs, satellite receivers, security cameras, Blu-ray players, DVD players, etc.

How many inputs does the Slingbox have?
The Slingbox 350 has:

    1 component input/output
    1 composite input/output
    1 shared RCA audio input/output

The Slingbox 500 adds an HDMI input/output for added on-screen functionality.

How do I know if the Slingbox is compatible with my device?
The Slingbox is compatible with most A/V devices such as cable or satellite receivers, Blu-ray or DVD players, even VCRs. And SlingPlayer works on most mobile devices such as iOS phones and tablets, Android phones and tablets, Windows Phone, and Kindle Fire tablets. For more information please go to

How do I watch my TV with a mobile device?

How do you connect the Slingbox to a router in a different room?
There are 3 ways to connect a Slingbox 350 to your router: via Ethernet cable, via a powerline adapter, or via a wireless Ethernet bridge. Can I connect a Slingbox via Wi-Fi?
Yes – the Slingbox 500 includes built-in Wi-Fi as well as an Ethernet port. Using the on-screen set-up, you can use the Wi-Fi feature that's built into the Slingbox 500 to connect to a wireless-enabled router in your home network. How can I watch remotely on a TV set?
You can watch your Slingbox on a TV using a connected device, such as NETGEAR NeoTV or WD TV Live, which come with the SlingPlayer app preloaded. Simply connect the device to your TV set via HDMI, connect it to your home network, and launch the SlingPlayer app from the device menu. For more information on connected devices, please go to

Can I watch with my smart TV?

What is the impact on my wireless data limit when using the SlingPlayer mobile app?
Check with the Internet provider with whom you have the limited plan (usually either your home Internet provider or your mobile phone carrier). Most providers offer online (or mobile phone-based) tools that you can use to check your data usage on a regular (even daily) basis. Does the Slingbox have a power switch?
There is no power switch. For the remote access feature to work, the Slingbox must remain powered on at all times.
