Why is SlingPlayer a web Plugin and not a separate App

Why is the Slingp[layer for desktop a Web plug-in instead of a true standalone application? There is no need or benefit from running inside a browser, but there are many drawbacks. Please change it to a standalone app, t least for the Mac, since
